Opening of the Renovated Faculty Canteen Kitchen
The newly renovated kitchen and entrance of the Faculty Canteen were officially opened for students on 26 January 2026, with the participation of the Dean, Senior Assistant Registrar, academic and non-academic staff, and student representatives. Mr Pasindu Punchihewa, a final-year medical student who actively highlighted the need for this development and shared valuable student perspectives, participated in the opening ceremony at the Dean's invitation.
This renovation addressed a long-standing need of both students and staff, felt for over two decades. The kitchen has been modernised and equipped with up-to-date facilities to provide hygienic, safe, and high-quality meals. As a large proportion of students rely on the Faculty canteen for their daily meals, this upgrade represents a significant improvement to student welfare.
The Hotel Canteen, which was renovated and equipped with modern facilities in 2021, continues to operate under a new service model managed by the Kelaniya University Faculty of Medicine Teachers’ Association (KUFMTA), providing uninterrupted food services to students.
The successful completion of this project was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the Senior Assistant Registrar’s Office, Works Department, and Electrical Department. Advisory contributions were provided by Dr Sujeewani Kurukulasuriya, Dr Rasitha Deduwela, and Dr Thilini Pannala.
The renovation of the Faculty Canteen is part of a broader initiative to create a more attractive, liveable, and student-friendly environment, supporting a positive academic culture within the Faculty.
