The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kelaniya is one of ten state medical schools in Sri Lanka. It commenced classes with the admission of 120 medical students in September 1991 and has now graduated more than 20 batches of medical students. The Faculty currently offers two undergraduate degree programmes for internal students: MBBS and BSc (Speech & Hearing Sciences). Through the Faculty of Graduate Studies, it offers research degrees leading to M.Phil, D.M. and Ph.D., a Postgraduate Certificate in Epidemiology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Epidemiology, and a Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology. Through the University's Centre for Distance & Continuing Education, the Faculty also offers two external Diploma-to-Degree programmes: BSc (Occupational Therapy) and BSc (Physiotherapy).
Today, the faculty has about 1000 students on its roll. This includes several foreign students, mainly from other South Asian countries, who have been admitted on a self-financing basis. The Faculty also welcomes students for elective appointments and many students from medical schools in Europe, USA and Australia have spent their elective periods with us.
The Faculty has about 140 academic staff, including 23 Professors. They are complemented by over 60 visiting staff that includes consultants who are based in the affiliated teaching hospitals and other universities.
