Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya Secures Runner-Up Position at the 5th Inter-Medical Faculty Forensic Medicine Tournament - 2026

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya emerged as runner-up at the 5th Inter-Medical Faculty Forensic Medicine Debating Tournament - 2026, following an impressive performance throughout the competition.

The tournament comprised three stages: preliminary, semi-final, and final rounds. The initial rounds were conducted online, while the Grand Finale was held at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Team Kelaniya successfully advanced through the preliminary and semi-final rounds, debating on contemporary ethical issues in healthcare and artificial intelligence. Their strong arguments and consistent performance secured them a place in the final.

In the Grand Finale, Kelaniya competed against the University of Sri Jayewardenepura on the motion regarding the ethical implications of advanced forensic DNA databases. The debate was highly competitive, showcasing exceptional analytical and debating skills from both teams.

The Kelaniya team consisted of:

• Miss Ruveesha Fernando
• Miss Maziyya Anas

Miss Maziyya Anas was awarded Best Speaker of the Grand Finale and secured third place in the overall Best Speaker rankings of the tournament.

Senior Prof. Indira Kitulwatte, who served as the academic coordinator from Ragama, provided continuous guidance and support to the team throughout the competition.

After a closely contested debate, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was declared the champion with a split decision, placing the University of Kelaniya as runner-up.

The achievement highlights the strength, dedication, and academic excellence of the Kelaniya forensic medicine debating team, further enhancing the faculty’s reputation in inter-university academic competitions.
