Thai Pongal Celebrations 2025

Thai Pongal, the harvest festival celebrated primarily by Tamil Hindus, marks the beginning of the Tamil month of Thai and is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. This festival is a way to thank nature for providing us with a bountiful harvest and is celebrated with traditional rituals and the preparation of the special dish, Pongal.
The annual Thai Pongal celebrations of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya was held on 9th of February 2025. The event was organized by the Hindu Students' Association (HSA), an initiative that has brought new vigor to the university's culture since its formation in 2023
We were honored to have distinguished guests, including the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Madawa Chandratilake; Senior Treasurer of the Hindu Students' Union, Prof. P. Paranitharan; Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Dr. Thusitha B Wickramasinghe; and Senior Treasurer of the Islamic Students’ Society, Prof. Nayane Gunathilaka.
The highlight of the event was the vibrant cultural dances and sports, organized by faculty members, which showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Tamil community. Students from all batches actively participated in the traditional Thai Pongal rituals, games, and performances. The event created an atmosphere of joy and camaraderie, strengthening the bonds between students and encouraging unity within the faculty
This event marked the second Thai Pongal celebration since the formation of the HSA. The Union remains dedicated to sharing Tamil traditions with the diverse student body while maintaining cultural authenticity. The faculty's efforts in organizing this celebration were commendable, showcasing the strength of cultural diversity and enriching both the academic and social environment of the university
As traditional music filled the air and the aroma of sweet Pongal wafted through the campus, the Thai Pongal celebration at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, became a memorable occasion for everyone who attended.
