Volunteering to ensure food security at the University of Kelaniya
The Green Practice Committee, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya (GPC) and the students Green Society joined forces with the Higher Diploma in Crime Investigation (HDCL) student group, Ragama Police and National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Ragama to conduct a “Shramadana” campaign at the vegetable garden of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya adjoining Thalagolla Child Development Center. Event was held on the 11th of November 2022 from 7.30 p.m. onwards.
The Dean of the Faculty Professor Janaki Hewawasenti, OIC and officers of the Ragama police station, Director of the training, Police Academy of Sri Lanka, staff of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Ragama, academic and nonacademic staff of the faculty and the students participated in this event. About 150 volunteered enthusiastically contributed in weeding already cultivated area and clearing unused land for new crops. This vegetable garden is a project initiated by GPC and the Center for Sustainability Solutions (CSS), University of Kelaniya with the generous contribution of many well-wishers and volunteers in response to current economic crisis and food insecurity in the country. Harvest of the garden is provided to Faculty Canteen for a concession rate.
