The official launching of the Web-based Histopathology system (Web-HRS)

The official launching of the Web-based Histopathology system (Web-HRS) was held on the 4th of August 2022 at the main auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Kelaniya. Web-HRS was developed by the Department of Pathology in collaboration with the Health Data Science Unit of the Faculty of Medicine.

The event was graced by the chief guest Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Senior Prof. Janaki Hewavisenthi, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, clinical staff members of North Colombo Teaching Hospital (NCTH), academic staff, academic supportive staff and non-academic staff of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and postgraduate trainees in Histopathology of the Ragama cluster.

Web-HRS is a computer-assisted medical reporting system which records the details on patients and their histopathology specimens received at the histopathology laboratory of the Department of Pathology for diagnostic purposes. The system generates histopathology reports of these specimens which are directly accessed by the respective clinical staff at the Professorial Units of the North Colombo Teaching Hospital. The system improves the timeliness of the reporting and also reduces the usage of paper. Web-HRS will facilitate data retrieval for research and medical statistics. Continuous monitoring of the training of the postgraduates is another key feature in this system.

The development of Web-HRS jointly with the Health Data Science Unit was initiated in mid-2015. The system was implemented in January 2018 and has been successfully used with modifications and updates for the past 5 ½ years. The facility of online access of reports by the clinical staff at the NCTH was made available in August 2022.

The strengths of the development team are Prof. Gayana Mahendra of the Department of Pathology, Dr Dileepa Ediriweera, Head of the Health Data Science Unit, Ms Gayathri Hettiarachchi, System Analyst of the Health Data Science Unit, Senior Prof. Janaki Hewavisenthi, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Dr Saumaya Liyanage, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Pathology, Dr. Mangala Bopagoda, Senior Lecture, Department of Pathology and Ms Kanishaka Thelisinghe, Management Assistant, Department of Pathology.
