SNAKEBITE

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

Snakebite envenoming is a neglected tropical disease which mainly affects poor people living in the rural tropics. Work on geographical and seasonal variation of snakebite risk, estimation of snakebite burden, future projection of disease burden under climate change, health-seeking patterns and economic costs following snakebite and methodological research including risk factor assessment and sampling methods for surveys done in Sri Lanka have been published by the group. Currently, research activities have been extended to re-estimate the global burden of snakebite and assessment of long-term health issues faced by victims.
