Felicitating a Distinguished Academic and Leader: Dr. Chrishantha Abeysena, Hon. Minister of Science and Technology
The Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, recently had the honour of welcoming back one of its own, Dr. Chrishantha Abeysena, now serving as the Honorable Minister of Science and Technology of Sri Lanka. Dr. Abeysena, a Senior Professor in the Department of Public Health, dedicated 27 years to academia, shaping the future of healthcare through his exceptional teaching, research, and mentorship.
Since joining the faculty in 1997, Dr. Abeysena has made a lasting impact on both undergraduate and postgraduate education in Community Medicine. He possesses an impressive research profile and his research helped the advancement of science contributing to improving the university ranking.

Beyond his academic roles, he has held esteemed positions such as the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Indigenous Medicine and the Deputy Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, exemplifying his commitment to advancing medical education in Sri Lanka.
In 2024, Dr. Abeysena transitioned from academia to politics, securing a seat in Parliament with overwhelming support in the general elections. He was entrusted with the critical portfolio of Minister of Science and Technology, a testament to his leadership and vision.
To honor his contributions to the faculty and the nation, on behalf of the faculty, the Dean, Professor Madawa Chandratilake, invited Dr. Abeysena to the Faculty Board meeting on 11 December 2024. During the event, the Dean extended a warm welcome, and Chair and Senior Professor of Public Health, Professor Rajitha Wickremasinghe, delivered a heartfelt felicitation speech. A token of appreciation was presented by the Dean to commemorate Dr. Abeysena’s invaluable service.
Dr. Abeysena also took time to reconnect with former colleagues, engaging in informal discussions and reminiscing about his time at the faculty. The academic community conveyed their best wishes as he embarked on this new chapter in public service.
