The sixth annual Faculty of Medicine Excellence Awards ceremony was held on Thursday 20th July 2023 at the Main Auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine. Pioneered by the Faculty of Medicine, this awards ceremony is held to recognize and reward highly motivated students who show outstanding abilities in both the academic sphere and in extracurricular activities, as well as recognize the commitment, passion and innovation of the teachers and non-academic staff of the faculty. At the awards ceremony this year, outstanding achievements of both students and staff of the faculty for the academic years of 2021/22 were recognized.
The Chief Guest at the Awards Ceremony was Senior Professor Nilanthi De Silva, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya,and the Guest of Honour was Senior Professor Janaki Hewavisenthi, Dean, Faculty of Medicine. The event was also attended by Senior Professor Sudath Kalingamudali, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Dr Chamli Pushpakumara, Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Technology as well as other invited guests from the university.
Students who excelled at their relevant examinations from the MBBS programme and BSc Speech and Hearing Sciences programme were named to the Dean’s List while students who performed extremely well in their academics as in as extra-curricular activities were recognized with Faculty Awards. Students who showed outstanding performance in extra-curricular activities during their time at the faculty were awarded with Faculty Extra-Curricular Activities Tributes (FEAT). Teaching Excellence Awards were given in recognition of academic staff from the MBBS and BSc Speech and Hearing Sciences programmes who excelled in teaching in small and large group settings, student mentorship and student supervision. Extended faculty members who supervise students from the MBBS programme during their third and fourth year clinical appointments and Speech and Hearing Sciences students during their clinical placements tpp were recognized for their contributions at the ceremony. Non-academic staff from three different categories were also awarded Faculty Excellence Awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions to faculty activities.
