Professor Chamila Mettananda graduated with MBBS from the University of Peradeniya in 2004, achieving 8 distinctions and earning the University Gold Medal for the best performance in Final MBBS. She went on to obtain an MD in Medicine in 2010, MRCP (UK) in 2013, and a PhD in 2017. Her training includes experience in Acute General Medicine at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, UK, and Stroke research at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford.
Presently, she holds board certification as a specialist in General Medicine and serves as a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Kelaniya. Her research on stroke and cardiovascular epidemiology has resulted in numerous publications, garnering over 1,200 citations. In recognition of her contributions to the field, she was elected as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2019, and of the American College of Physicians in 2020.
Furthermore, Professor Chamila Mettananda has been actively involved in various professional roles, including serving as the joint secretary of the Sri Lankan Society of Internal Medicine in 2018. She held positions as the Secretary of the Specialty Board in Clinical Pharmacology and therapeutics at the PGIM (2018-2022), Secretary of the Sri Lankan Association of ClinicalPharmacology and Therapeutics (2021-2023), and joint-Secretary of the Ceylon College of Physicians (2021-2022). She serves as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Ceylon College of Physicians. Her remarkable accomplishments and leadership roles reflect her commitment to advancing medical knowledge and enhancing healthcare practices.
Prof. Chamila Mettananda has received numerous prestigious awards and recognition for her exceptional academic achievements and contributions. Notably, she was awarded the Deshamanya Dr. J.B. Peiris award for the best presentation in Neurology at the Ceylon College of Physicians' 52nd annual academic session in both 2015 and 2019. In 2018, she received the E.M. Wijerama Award for the best paper at the SLMA 131st Anniversary International Medical Congress. Furthermore, her research and remarkable work were acknowledged at the Asia Pacific Stroke Conference (APSC) in 2017, where she was honored with the Young Investigator Award. The National Stroke Association of Sri Lanka also recognized her with an award for the best presentation on Stroke at the Ceylon College of Physicians' 48th annual academic session in September 2015. In 2022, she was awarded the Vice Chancellor's Merit Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions as a senior researcher in the Faculty of Medicine. She also delivered the S. Ramachandran Memorial Oration at the 135th Anniversary International Medical Congress hosted by SLMA in September 2022, highlighting her significant research contributions.
Throughout her academic journey, Prof. Chamila Mettananda's commitment to excellence has been consistently recognized through various awards. In 2004, she received the University Prize for Academic Excellence, along with the Dr. H.S. Keerthisinghe endowment and the Dr. Barr Kumar Kulasinghe Memorial Prize in Surgery. In preceding years, she had already been acknowledged with several awards, including the Dr. H.J. Hazari Gold Medal and the Irene Maralanda Panabokke Memorial Prize for Pathology in 2002. Additionally, she received the Punchi Banda Panabokke and Irene Maralanda Panabokke Memorial Scholarship, the Loos Gold Medal for Pathology, the Prof. G.E. Thennakoon Prize for Pathology, and the Prof. V. Sivalingam Memorial Prize in Parasitology in different years
