Information About CP

What is "Cerebral Palsy"?

A group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitations, that are attributed to non-progressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain.

The motor disorders of cerebral palsy are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behavior, by epilepsy, and by secondary musculoskeletal problems.

Key Facts About CP

Causes:

CP may result from various factors, including oxygen deprivation during birth, premature birth, infections during pregnancy, or genetic conditions. In some cases, the cause may remain unknown.

Symptoms:

Symptoms vary from person to person but often include difficulties with motor skills, muscle stiffness or weakness, poor balance, and involuntary movements. Some individuals may also experience associated conditions, such as epilepsy, intellectual disabilities, vision or hearing impairments, or speech challenges.

Types of CP:

CP is classified into four main types based on the movement challenges:

  • Spastic CP: Stiff muscles and difficulty with movement.
  • Dyskinetic CP: Uncontrolled, involuntary movements.
  • Ataxic CP: Poor balance and coordination.
  • Mixed CP: A combination of symptoms from the above types.

Diagnosis:

CP is typically diagnosed in early childhood based on developmental milestones, medical history, and assessments by healthcare professionals. Additional tests, such as brain imaging and genetic testing, may be used to confirm the diagnosis.

Living with CP

While CP cannot be cured, many treatments and interventions can help manage symptoms and enhance independence. These include:

  • Physical Therapy: To improve strength, mobility, and motor skills.
  • Occupational Therapy: To develop skills for daily living.
  • Speech Therapy: To address communication challenges.
  • Medical Management: Includes medications, assistive devices, and, in some cases, surgeries.
  • Education and Support: Inclusive schooling, caregiver support, and community services play a crucial role.

Raising Awareness and Promoting Inclusion

Cerebral palsy affects not only individuals but also their families and communities. Increased awareness, accessibility, and inclusion can empower individuals with CP to lead fulfilling lives.
