RESEARCH GROUP
CHILD DEVELOPMENT/ CHILDHOOD DISABILITIES

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

We are a group looking for innovative solutions to maximize functional levels of children with childhood disabilities in the low middle income settings. Our aim is to conduct multi-disciplinary research in childhood developmental disorders and we strive to developlocally appropriate and culturally adopted assessment and intervention solutions throughevidence based practices.
We look at research opportunities covering the life course approach from birth to youth-hood.
Our research geographies span from the Gampaha District to national and multi-centre international studies aiming the low middle income countries.
One land-mark project undertaken by us initiated a CP registry for Sri Lanka and will generate the prevalence of CP for Sri Lanka. Another major milestone achieved by our group is the locally validated preschool assessment tool development: Ragama Early Assessment of Children (REACh) tool. This will be nationalised in the local pre-school settings.

SRI LANKAN CEREBRAL PALSY REGISTER

The Sri Lankan CP Register (SLCPR) is a confidential database of clinical and demographic information about individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). Information collected about each person with CP includes birth details, type and severity of cerebral palsy, other associated impairments, and parent demographics. By collecting this information researchers can gain a better understanding of CP in Sri Lanka.

Participation in the CP register is voluntary. All information collected for the SLCPR is confidential and families can choose to withdraw from the register at any time. The Sri Lankan CP Register has been approved by the Ethics Review Committee, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya (+94 11 296 1000).

The aims of the SLCPR are to:

  • Gain a better understanding of how many people have CP in Sri Lanka and how it affects them
  • Improve health and education planning for people with CP
  • Improve our understanding of the causes of CP
  • Develop and evaluate preventative strategies
  • Promote CP research

Currently, the University of Kelaniya is working with CP Lanka, health professionals and families to collect data for children with CP born in or living in the Western and Eastern Provinces.
It is hoped that in the future the SLCPR can be expanded to be a nationwide register.
