Exhibition on “Disability and Rehabilitation Services in Sri Lanka”

An exhibition was held on “Disability and Rehabilitation Services in Sri Lanka” at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo on 8th September 2023.  Mr. Amila Dilshan (Physiotherapist), Ms. Hiruni Jayathilake (Demonstrator / Intern Speech and Language therapist) and Ms. Dinusha Fonseka (Intern Speech and Language therapist) representing Ayati team join ed the exhibition to improve the awareness of the undergraduates of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, regarding the services available in the area of disability and rehabilitation.

Areas discussed at the stall of Ayati Centre:

  • Brief introduction to Ayati Centre
  • Multidisciplinary team approach practiced at Ayati
  • Use of evidence-based interventions at Ayati
  • How qualified we are in both clinically and academically in providing the services.
  • Early intervention and its importance
  • Implementation of family centered interventions at Ayati
  • Overall services provided by Ayati as a PowerPoint presentation
  • Speech and Language Therapy aspect: Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems such as Avaz AAC App, Picseepal, BigMac, Communication books, low-tech eye gaze systems, large key keyboard and tangible objects in a light box
  • Education Therapy aspect: Multi- Sensory approach materials, Avaz MDA Reader app, CVI friendly adaptations used to facilitate learning such as the slant board, table lamp, CVI friendly adapted Grade 1 textbooks and adapted storybooks.
  • Physiotherapy aspect: AFOs, Modified Posterior walker, Seating devices - Explained the importance of assessing the gait prior to management plan of mobility including Botox, prescribing orthotic devices and designing and prescribing mobility devices
  • Early Intervention Services at Ayati for Infants at High Risk for Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Overall, the experience of representing our institute on the exhibition was an invaluable one. It allowed us to showcase our capabilities, work as a team, and develop crucial skills for our future endeavors. By reflecting on this experience and implementing the lessons learned, we can be better prepared for the next exhibition, ensuring that we leave a lasting impression and continue to uphold the reputation of our center, Ayati.
