All Sri Lankan medical graduates graduating from local universities are required to undertake a one-year internship before they are granted full registration to practice medicine by the Sri Lanka Medical Council. During this one-year period they are required to work as house officers under the supervision of consultants in Teaching, Provincial General or Base hospitals. Medical Internship is comprised of two appointments (6-months each) in Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics or Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
