Sri Lanka is an agricultural country, blessed with fertile, tropical land, a perfect climate, and adequate water throughout the year, and is very farmer-friendly. Yet, issues such as effectiveness, productivity, and the lack of proper management, have hindered food production of the country. Production is insufficient even for the consumption of the population. Dr. Manuja Perera, Senior Lecturer in Community Medicine, of the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, expressed her views on the present status of food security in Sri Lanka.

Disposal of face mask and other items related to COVID 19 in the University premises

Use of personal protective equipment’s (PPEs) such as face masks, face shield, gloves and aprons etc. has become a requirement within the University premises to prevent the spread of Covid 19. Proper disposal of these items by the students and staff is important for the health and safety of the university employees as well as protection of the environment.

  1. Whenever possible, discard PPEs at home following safety procedures.
  2. Please DO NOT dispose PPEs into the recycling bins in the University premises.
  3. Please use light blue bins designated for PPE disposal to dispose PPEs within the University premises.
  4. Discarding PPEs should be placed inside two small paper bags/paper - one inside the other. Tie/fold the bags firmly and throw them in the designated bins.
  5. Contents of these bins will be disposed daily, according to health and safety regulations.
