On the 24th of June 2025, a timely awareness program on microplastics was conducted for the first-year students of faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, featuring Mr. Lahiru Wijerathna, the Chief Executive Officer of Modern Pack Lanka (Pvt) Ltd at the pre-clinical auditorium. It was organized by the Green practice committee together with the Green Society.
The session started with an introduction on microplastics, their presence in our day to day lives and the impact on the environment through real-world examples, current research data. The session also emphasized simple, practical steps that students can take to contribute towards reducing plastic pollution in their daily lives. These included using reusable bags instead of single-use polythene bags, carrying reusable water bottles to avoid plastic waste, and opting for lunch boxes instead of disposable lunch sheets. Such small lifestyle changes, when adopted collectively, can make a significant impact in the effort to minimize plastic pollution and promote sustainable living.
The contribution of Mr. Wijerathna in bridging the gap between industry expertise and student awareness was deeply appreciated. The session was moderated by Mr. Isuru Jayasekara, from the 32nd batch.
