Medical and SHS (Speech and Hearing Sciences) students, came together to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year with the children at the ACCC Child Development Center in a ‘green’ manner on the 27th of April 2025.
An Awurudu hut was prepared using coconut leaves, palm leaves, monstera leaves, Helicornia and Araliya flowers, and other natural materials, avoiding plastic or synthetic decorations entirely. It was both a celebration of culture and a statement of sustainability. The hearth was decorated with Araliya flowers and its leaves to intermingle the culture with our nature. Flowers from the faculty garden were used for all the decorations.
The games we organized were adapted to suit the abilities of the children and were carried out in the open air, with some help of the shade of trees. The refreshments were served with eco-friendly alternatives, promoting our commitment to reducing waste.
Lunch was served to all the kids and others who participated for the event. Extra food was distributed among hostellers and the leftovers were given to faculty dogs.
After finishing the event, all those coconut leaves were reused in a neighboring vegetable garden. Other degradable waste was discarded for compost. No trash was left on the ground and none were burnt.
