The Green Society of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, joined hands with the Rekawa Turtle Sanctuary for a two-day educational workshop held on the 2nd and 3rd of November 2024. Around 45 members of the society took part in this special program.
It was a valuable opportunity to learn about sea turtles and see them in their natural habitat at one of the Sri Lanka’s turtle sanctuary. Participants also had the chance to meet members of the "Nature Friends of Rekawa" – local villagers who shared their long-standing experiences and knowledge about turtle conservation.
One of the most exciting moments was the night-time turtle watching, during which the group was fortunate enough to witness two Green turtles laying eggs: a rare and unforgettable experience.
On the second day, the group took part in an awareness session on mangrove ecosystems, which exists only in limited parts of the world. These sessions were conducted by Prof. Mala Amarasinghe and Mr. Krishan Wewalwala, who shared their expertise and insights.
