As many of you may recall, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, was recognized as a polythene-free zone. However, with the onset of the pandemic, attention to this initiative declined, leading to a significant increase in polythene use within the faculty.
In response, the Faculty’s Green Practices Committee has reintroduced the polythene ban, effective from 1st January 2025. This decision is also in line with the Clean Sri Lanka Project; which has issued a circular encouraging the enforcement of polythene restrictions.
Key Guidelines:
- All individuals are encouraged to bring reusable lunch boxes and avoid using lunch sheets or disposable polythene food wrappers.
- The faculty canteen is strictly prohibited from using polythene bags for packaging or serving food.
Let’s all work together to support this important environmental initiative and maintain a sustainable, polythene-free faculty.
