Reduce, Reuse & Recycle!

The Green Practice Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya has been leading a noteworthy sustainability initiative for several years by collecting and recycling items from each outgoing batch of students. Through the recycling of books, notes, scrub suits, clothing and electronic items, the committee actively contributes to waste reduction and the conservation of resources.

This collection effort serves multiple purposes. It helps prevent reusable materials from ending up in landfills, thereby reducing the environmental impact of waste disposal. The reuse of scrubs and clothing supports the principle of extending the life of usable items, while books and paper waste are sent for recycling, along with the faculty’s general waste.

Beyond its practical benefits, the initiative promotes a culture of sustainability and responsible consumption within the faculty community. It serves as a platform to educate students and staff on the importance of waste management and the broader environmental consequences of consumption habits. By engaging the outgoing batch in these efforts, the Green Practice Committee helps instill values of environmental responsibility and stewardship in future healthcare professionals.

This year, the outgoing students of Batch 29 were formally  thanked and appreciated by the Faculty Board for their active support in the recycling and cleaning activities. Their efforts played a  key role in the continued success in making the project a success.
