Digital Shifts and Green Moves at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya, continues to lead by example in embracing sustainable and eco-conscious practices across its academic and administrative activities.

From small daily habits to institution-wide shifts, the faculty has implemented a variety of measures to reduce its environmental footprint. Notable practices include the reuse of single-sided paper and the default setting of double-sided printing, which significantly reduces paper waste.

Academic processes have undergone a digital transformation; promoting both efficiency and sustainability. Exam attendance is now marked digitally, meeting minutes are recorded and shared online, and the Ethics Review Committee (ERC) accepts research proposal submissions electronically. Furthermore, student portfolios and academic timetables are maintained in digital formats, reducing the need for paper-based records.

In the spirit of sustainability, even the faculty’s creative output reflects a paperless approach. The newsletter, Prathiba, is published exclusively in soft copy, aligning with the institution’s paper-reduction goals.

Energy-saving practices have also been introduced in the faculty’s computer labs, where monitors are set to energy-saving mode, helping conserve power during inactivity.

These small but impactful steps taken by the faculty reflect a forward-thinking commitment to environmental responsibility. As the world shifts toward more sustainable practices, the Faculty of Medicine stands as a model for how academic institutions can lead with purpose and innovation.
