A Second – Hand Item Sale as a step towards sustainability

The Kelaniya University Faculty of Medicine Teachers’ Association (KUFMTA) implemented a sustainable initiative by organising a second-hand item sale. The event was held on 21st December 2023, within the faculty premises.

The primary aim of the sale was to promote an eco-friendly culture of reusing and reducing waste. Staff members were encouraged to donate pre-loved, gently used items such as sarees, shoes, books, household items, kids’ clothes, jewellery, etc. The items were checked for quality and sold to students and staff at a nominal fee.
This second-hand item sale was expected to provide the staff and students with an opportunity to buy quality second-hand items. This initiative further encouraged the adoption of mindful consumption practices, especially amid challenging economic times for the country.

The event marked a remarkable success, generating substantial revenue, which was directed towards the ‘free food tag’ system providing free lunches from the KUFMTA canteen to needy students. Feedback from the staff suggested an annual event creating a culture of thriftiness and sustainability.
