The Green Practice Committee (GPC) of the Faculty of Medicine (FOM), University of Kelaniya (UOK), organized volunteer event to clean the plastic debris and the hurdles scattered on the Negombo Beach on 4th of December 2021. It was also hoped to develop a sense of responsibility among the undergraduates at the FOM and the staff and to strengthen their camaraderie through a team effort to reduce pollution.
Plastic waste collected was donated to recycling centers and other waste was disposed appropriately. Increasing awareness of responsible citizenship among the participants and the public and shed a focusing light on initiatives such as The Pearl protectors, who have been doing commendable work in making the environment safe for all was a parallel objective.
The team participating was trained in the process and ready to be dispatched as a task force at an event like the Xpress pearl disaster; should such an unfortunate event recur.
Strengthening the attitudes of social responsibility and volunteerism on the day before the volunteer day is celebrated globally undoubtedly left a memorable impression on these young and young at heart contributors.
