SHORT COURSE ON BASICS IN RESEARCH FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

This course aims to develop research capacity among postgraduate students in the medical stream, undergraduate medical students in Universities, Health Professionals in hospitals and other health related higher education institutes in Sri Lanka.

This short course provides students/participants with valuable skills and knowledge essential for conducting effective research. They gain a solid understanding of research design, data collection, and analysis techniques, enabling them to evaluate existing research and produce high-quality, data-driven work critically.

This course also enhances problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities, helping students to identify research gaps, formulate hypotheses, and apply appropriate methodologies to answer complex questions. Additionally, students/participants learn best practices for conducting ethical research, data interpretation, and reporting, making them more competitive in academic and professional settings and better prepared for advanced studies or research-based careers.

 

Course Content
How to Write a Good Research Proposal
  • To get an understanding of the different types of study designs used in research
  • To write an effective research/project proposal
  • To understand how to apply for local and international research grants
Literature Searching made easy, Literature Review and Bibliographic Referencing
  • To make effective use of the library and search for information through different search engines/databases
  • To effectively use AI tools in information-seeking
  • To be able to write a literature review
  • To be able to understand bibliographic referencing
Implementation of a Research
  • To be able to appreciate different data-collecting methods that could be adopted.
  • To appreciate the importance of regulations, ethics and moral responsibilities in research
  • To understand the process of obtaining ethical clearance
Data Analysis and Presenting Results
  • To be able to understand the free data analysis software available
  • To understand how to refine and organise data
Publishing Results
  • To develop skills in writing abstracts, research papers and theses
  • To develop research presentations in the form of posters or PowerPoint presentations and improve communication skills
  • To promote the culture of publishing in an indexed journal
