The faculty of medicine, Ragama which belongs to the University of Kelaniya, is one of eight state medical schools in Sri Lanka. It is situated 25 Km from Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. The faculty offers several internal and external degree programmes and research degrees through the faculty of graduate studies. There are around 140 academic staff, complemented by over 60 visiting staff that includes consultants based in affiliated teaching hospitals and other universities. The faculty is equipped with many medical and research laboratories, skills laboratory, library and computer center.

The Colombo North Teaching Hospital, which is affiliated to the Faculty of Medicine, Ragama, is a tertiary care hospital, that is situated adjacent to the Faculty of Medicine. A major part of undergraduate clinical training takes place in this hospital which has a wide array of sub specialities apart from the main clinical specialities.
