THALASSAEMIA UNIT

In conjunction with the adult haematologist (Prof. Anuja Premawardana) , Dr. D.S.G. Mettananda,Consultant Paediatrician is in the process of developing a Paediatric Thalassaemia Unit at the National Thalassaemia Centre, Kiribathgoda.
We intend to start specialised care for children with Thalassaemia addressing all aspects of care at the unit commencing from 2016 onwards.
This unit will be a centre of excellence with regard to both clinical care and research in the near future.

Center for Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Our department has a special interest in paediatric gastroenterology and hepatology which is carried out under the guidance of Consultant Paediatrician Prof. Shaman Rajindrajith.

We have a well trained staff to look after children who suffer from constipation and various other functional gastrointestinal disorders.

In addition we are the only specialised unit providing care for children with inflammatory bowel disease in the country.

Our expertise also includes helping neurologically handicapped children with feeding difficulties. Insertion of percutaneous gastrostomy tubes via endoscopy is also taken place at the unit.

Furthermore, we treat children with complex liver disorders in collaboration with the team of adult hepatologists Dr. Anuradha Dassanayake and Dr. M.A. Niriella. The unit conduct specialized liver clinic in collaboration with experts of paediatic hepatology from India.

Endoscopic facilities for children are also available in the ward setup.

NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

The University Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides intensive care and specialised care for neonates of the area and those referred from all over the country for specialised fetal medicine management.
NICU consists of 5 ventilator beds, 1 CPAP machine and 10 other special care beds.It is intended to commence whole body cooling for babies who have suffered from birth asphyxia very soon; this will be the first unit in Sri Lanka to offer the therapy.
The Lactation Management Centre provides services to mothers who are inpatients and is also open for 'walk-in' self referrals for those who have difficulties in breast feeding their babies.

GENERAL PAEDIATRIC CLINICS AND SPECIAL CLINICS

Children referred for specialist management from the out-patients department and those who require follow-up for chronic conditions are looked after in these clinics.These clinics are conducted daily, except on weekends.
The "Well Baby Clinic" and "Development Clinic" on Wednesdays, provides services with regard to Immunization.It is conducted byRanmali Rodrigo, Consultant Paediatric Neonatologist and Dr. Samanmali Sumanasena, Senior Lecturer , Department of Disability Studies.
The "Gastroeneterology Clinic" is conducted every Monday by Dr. Shaman Rajindrajith, Consultant Paediatrician, to care for children with various gastroenterological and liver disorders from all over the island.

PAEDIATRIC WARDS AND HIGH DEPENDENCY UNIT (HDU)

The professorial paediatric ward is a tertiary care unit for patients in the paediatric age group from any part of the country.
A paediatric ward consisting of 68 beds including a High Dependency Unit with emergency care together with specialised non emergency care at cubicles divided into Acute, Subacute, Chronic and Diarrhoeal units is available for patient care. Six Specialist Paediatricians attached to the department, several paediatric registrars, senior registrars and intern house officers provide care in the unit.
