LIVER SERVICES Our Paediatric hepatology services are strengthened by the multidisciplinary specialists including hepatobiliary and transplant surgeons, Radiologists, Histo-pathologists, Nutrition specialists, Psychotherapists and endoscopic staff who work with us to provide a holistic care. Furthermore, according to a MOU signed between University GI & hepatology unit, faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and a reputed liver transplant centre in India, we provide combined specialised liver clinics every 2-3 months at transplantation unit in faculty premises. We provide our services for; children with various types of liver diseases children needing liver transplantation children who has already undergone liver transplantation

01Pre-transplantation care for children needing liver transplantation

• Optimization of nutrition
• Optimization of liver specific medications prior to transplantation
• Accelerated vaccination schedule
• Counselling & support group encounters
• Biliary diversion
• Linking patients with donations for transplantation with available resources
• Follow up of children with chronic liver disease who will need transplantation in future to optimize medical management and to plan the timing of transplantation

02Donor workup for paediatric liver transplantation

• Donor screening for suitability and compatibility
• Management of modifiable factors of donors to be eligible for liver donation

03Post liver transplantation care

• Management of immunosuppressive medications
• Surveillance of transplantation related infections, diseases and complications
• Management of overall care and subsequent medical problems in a transplanted child

04Comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for liver diseases in children (medical & surgical)

• We are keen in providing assessment of liver problems ranging from neonates to adolescents
• We liaise with overseas laboratories whenever the diagnostic aids are necessary especially with the genetic analysis
• We are strengthened with GI and hepatobiliary surgeons in collaboration with department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Ragama in managing surgical aspects of our patients

05Endoscopic services for children with cirrhotic or non-cirrhotic portal hypertension

• Carrying out periodic surveillance endoscopies
• Provide sclerotherapy / banding for upper GI varices

06Management of children with acute liver failure

• We provide specialised care in managing children with acute liver failure

07Liver biopsy services and specialised histopathology opinion

• We provide liver biopsy services as part of the diagnostic workup of liver diseases
• We are honoured to have specialised histopathology services in collaboration with department of pathology, faculty of Medicine
• We do get regular referrals for specialised histopathology opinion or for second opinion for biopsies already performed, in certain occasions
