GASTROENTEROLOGY SERVICES

We provide dedicated care for paediatric GI disorders including following commonly encountered diseases

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, IBD unspecified)
  • Functional gastrointestinal disorders
  • Gastrointestinal motility disorders
  • Constipation
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
  • Feeding difficulties and poor weight gain
  • Early-onset autoimmune gastrointestinal inflammatory disorders
  • Chronic gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea or vomiting
  • Coeliac disease and food allergies
  • Intestinal bleeding
  • Intestinal failure and short gut syndrome
  • Pancreatic disorders

Our services are strengthened by the multidisciplinary team who commonly provide their services for children with paediatric GI problems.

Specialists including Radiologists, Histo-pathologists, GI Physiologists, Nutrition specialists, Psychotherapists and endoscopic staff work with us to provide best care.

 

Following are main services provided by our unit;

01Paediatric endoscopic services

Our weekly paediatric endoscopic services cover common diagnostic and therapeutic needs of children with GI problems.

The endoscopies are done by experienced endoscopists who deliver paediatric services together with the dedicated anaesthetic and nursing staff.

Commonly encountered indications for endoscopic services are

Paediatric upper gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • Upper GI bleeding / Variceal surveillance / Sclerotherapy/ Banding
  • Suspected coeliac disease /malabsorption
  • Recurrent abdominal pain
Paediatric lower GI endoscopic services
  • Suspected inflammatory bowel disease
  • Suspected rectal polyps / endoscopic polypectomy
  • Unexplained lower GI bleeding
  • Surveillance of familial adenomatous polyposis

02GI physiological studies

We provide GI physiological studies in collaboration with department of physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Ragama including

  • Gastric emptying studies
  • Autonomic functions

03Follow up care for children with inflammatory bowel disease

We provide specialised inpatient and out -patient services for children with inflammatory bowel disease

  • exclusive enteral nutrition
  • Immunosuppressants
  • Biological agents

04Nutritional rehabilitation of children with GI disorders

We have expertise in assessment and management of complex nutritional problems associated with paediatric GI disorders and we provide a dedicated care in terms of nutritional rehabilitation.

05Management of gastrointestinal problems of neurologically handicapped children

We consider gastrostomy or jejunostomy insertion in terms of nutritional rehabilitation of children with neurological disability. In addition, we treat their other gastrointestinal diseases such as constipation and gastroesophageal reflux and feeding difficulties.

06Management of functional GI disorders

Paediatric functional GI disorders do present in various ways including recurrent abdominal pain, constipation, multiple somatic complaints, cyclical vomiting, etc.

We provide detailed diagnostic assessments and individualised therapies in accordance with evidence based medical practice including psychotherapy and medications.
