1. LEARNING ETHICAL ASPECTS OF MEDICAL PRACTICE THROUGH CINEMA

Students should watch movies from the collection of films during two weeks period and engage in student presentations and interactive discussions on ethical aspects related to the movies. Students are allowed to watch moves individually on their own and as a group.Students brought new films and TV series to the collection for future reference. Case based discussion on real case scenarios was carried out by prof. NIlanthi De Silva.

Original idea of this student selected component was developed by Dr. PriyanjithPerara and further developed and conducted by Dr. Nirmala Perara and Dr. P. Paranitharan.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  1. To understand the complexity of ethical issues, which stretch beyond deceiving simplicity of medical ethics, taught in the class room.
  2. To understand the dehumanizing effects of the ways, in which the conventional medicine is taught today and appreciate that there is much more practicing medicine than knowledge and skills in the science of medicine.
  3. To understand the way in which the social, cultural, psychological and behavioural, political, economic factors affect the practice of Medicine.
  4. To appreciate the 'golden rule' of ethics, which is "one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself".
  5. To have knowledge in 'critical thinking" and appreciate its importance in medical practice and research.
