In keeping with the need to expand and improve allied health care services in the country, the Molecular Medicine Unit (MMU) was established by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Kelaniya in March 2002, with the approval of the University Grants Commission. The Molecular Medicine Unit seeks to improve the healthcare services in the country by providing consultancy services in Molecular Diagnosis, DNA typing and by engaging research activities in infectious/vector-borne and genetic diseases.
The MMU was set up to achieve the following objectives.

To provide molecular diagnostic services for infectious/genetic diseases.

To provide DNA typing services for judicial purposes/establishment of paternity.

To promote research in molecular biological aspects of infectious diseases/genetic diseases.

To carryout undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
