“Lumière 2019” : The Annual Speech Camp

Unveiling the third consecutive milestone, the Annual Speech Camp “Lumière 2019”,organized by the English Language Unit of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya in collaboration with MBBS Batch 30 and SHS Batch 11 was successfully held on the 09th of July 2019 at the Pre-Clinical Auditorium in the faculty premises, marking the end of the English Intensive Course.

The objective of the “Speech Camp” was to showcase the talents of undergraduates whilst developing their English language competencies.

“Lumière 2019” consisted of a stage performance session where there were several segments such as Dramas, Fancy Dress Parade, Singing and dancing items. In this year, a new segment was introduced in the English Speech Camp, which was the “Speech Competition”. Each and every undergraduate from MBBS Batch 30 and SHS Batch 11 participated in the preliminary rounds of the Speech Contest. In that round students were selected for the semi-final round, through which 10 contestants were selected from prepared and impromptu speeches. This year, the winner of the Impromptu Speech Contest was Janindu Karunarathne from MBBS Batch 30 and the winner of the Prepared Speech Contest was Ayeshan Abeywardana from MBBS Batch 30.

The event was graced by Dr. Shashikala Assella, from the Department of English, Univeristy of Keelaniya as the Guest-of-Honour. Dr. Pavithra Godamunne, Head - Department of Medical Education, Mr. Hasitha Pathrirana, Head - Department of English Language Teaching and other Academic Staff members of the faculty graced the occasion.
