The CTU's work chiefly involves studies of neglected tropical diseases such as snakebite and non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, ischaemic heart disease or stroke, which collectively, account for most adult deaths in Sri Lanka. The CTU, through its exclusive partnership with RemediumOne, Sri Lanka's pioneering clinical research company, facilitates the conduct of clinical trials in these disease areas by providing suitably trained manpower, scientific and logistical support, coordinating facilities, and other support for academic institutions as well as multinational pharmaceutical companies involved in the development of novel therapeutic interventions. The goal of all our research is to achieve the CTU's mission to improve the practice of medicine through evidence. We are recognized as a centre for training postgraduate students by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, Colombo, and contribute regularly to academic programmes organized by medical associations, professional colleges and various other institutions. Large-scale randomized and observational evidence is needed to investigate appropriately the causes, prevention and treatment of premature death and disability. Such research does require widespread collaboration, and the CTU has an excellent track record of establishing international collaborations and conducting large-scale, multi-centre, clinical research projects in Sri Lanka. The CTU has ongoing research collaborations with the centres of excellence including the Clinical Trial Service Unit - University of Oxford, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, Duke Clinical Research Institute, Duke-NUS, and INDOX research group.
