At present the department teaches both first and second year medical undergraduates during the basic science course. In total around 380 students follow the first and second year course where the normal structure and function of the human body is taught.

This degree programme is the first university-approved professional training programme leading to a BSc Degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences in Sri Lanka. Successful completion of the programme indicates professional competence to practice as a Speech and Language Therapist or an Audiologist in Sri Lanka.
