Infective endocarditis and other types of endocarditis

At the end of this lecture student should be able to:

  • Define endocarditis
  • Describe the spectrum of infective endocarditis
  • List the clinical features of infective endocarditis and explain the underlying pathophysiological basis of these features.
  • List and briefly describe the other types of endocarditis - Non bacterial thrombotic endocarditis, Libmann Sacks endocarditis, Carcinoid heart disease
  • Differentiate between each of these types of endocarditis.
  • Describe endocarditis occurring in special situations – drug addicts, elderly and in prosthetic valves
