Pathology is the study of disease by scientific methods. The teaching of pathology is conducted through subspecialties such as histopathology, cytopathology, haematology and chemical pathology. The main teaching commitment of our department is for the 3rd and 4th year medical undergraduates. Department is also involved with teaching of the Postgraduate students of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine and undergraduate students of the Department of Disability Studies. The Department provides laboratory services and honorary consultancy services for the professorial units of the North Colombo Teaching Hospital. Special Research interests of the faculty staff include Inflammatory bowel disease, Non-alcoholic steaoto-hepatitis, soft tissue pathology, breast pathology, chronic leukaemia and cervical pathology.
