Histopathology and cytopathology services to non- governmental hospitals/institutions
The Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya provides histopathology/ special stains and cytopathology services to non- governmental hospitals/institutions for a reasonable fee which is less than that of the cost of the current private sector charges.
- All samples should be received at the histopathology laboratory on the same day or the day after the surgery between 8.30 am -3 pm on weekdays.
- Each sample should be accompanied by a duly filled request form which will be provided by the department (annexure 2) link The contact numbers of both the patient and the doctor, preferably the consultant is essential.
- The transport of specimens is a responsibility of the institution concerned.
- Ensure
- an adequate amount of good quality 10% formalin as the fixative
- leak proof plastic containers
- adequate size of the container to accommodate the specimen
- Patient’s name, BHT /clinic number, sample type and the price of each sample should be tabulated in the form provided ( Annexure 3). Verify and confirm the prices from a designated member in the Department of Pathology before the payment.
- The full payment to be paid to the Bursar’s office, Faculty of Medicine in cash on receipt of the specimens.
- If your institution adds a handling charge for each of these samples , make sure that the total amount charged from the patient is reasonably lower than that of the private sector charge for a similar specimen as our aim is to provide the benefit of cutting the cost to the patient.
- The reports are to be collected by the institution within the following time frame
- Reports of the biopsies – 2 weeks
- Reports of surgical specimens- 3-4 weeks
- FNAC and other Cytology samples- 2 week
- Pap smears-1 month
- Any urgent specimens will be given priority and an early report will be provided if it is informed to the laboratory on receipt.
