Professor Shivanthi Janaki De Silva, Professor of Pathology was awarded the prestigious South Asian Academy of Cytopathology & Histopathology (SACH) Oration 2016 held in Dharan Nepal at the BP Koirala Institute of Medical Science on the 17^th of October.

The oration was entitled ‘Is inflammatory bowel disease in Asia different from the West? The Sri Lankan experience’, and in this oration she presented her research findings and experience of over two decades in the diagnosis and management of Inflammatory bowel disease.

Professor Hewavisenthi becomes the first Sri Lankan pathologist to deliver this prestigious oration.

Professor Shivanthi Janaki De Silva joined the University of Kelaniya as a Lecturer in 1996 and was promoted to the post of Senior Lecturer in 1997. Twelve years later she became the first person to the hold the Chair in the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya.

Working in the Kelaniya Medical School has provided her the correct milieu to become a successful researcher. She has published approximately 50 papers in reputed journals and has over 60 conference papers to her credit with over 200 citations. She was elected a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences in 2012 in recognition of her excellence in research. She has approximately 10 national awards for research papers presented at conferences including a Presidential merit award for research in 2011 and 2012.

Her expertise in GI and Liver pathology has made her a much sought after guest lecturer at many National and International fora the latter including lectures at the IAP (Singapore and Australia), APDW (Malaysia), SAACH (Bangladesh).
