ABOUT US

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology being one of the clinical departments in the faculty, deals with undergraduate teaching, postgraduate training and research in many aspects of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Further more the department provides clinical services through the Obstetrics & Gynaecology wards of the teaching hospital, Ragama. One of the main goals of the department is to produce good and competent clinicians who are capable of handling the challenges in the evolving discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The department is involved in the undergraduate teaching through lectures and tutorials conducted through the phase 1 and phase 2 Reproductive Modules along with the eight week full time clinical appointment during their final year. The final year students too will have academic sessions apart from the ward classes in the form of tutorials. During the final year professorial appointment the undergraduates gain firsthand experience in managing labour and other obstetric and gynaecological conditions.

The department is also involved in postgraduate training through collaboration with the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo. The staff takes special concern with this regard so that the trainees will be moulded into impeccable clinicians that the country and the global community can take pride in.

Apart from the teaching programmes the department is also involved in providing clinical services to patients in the affiliated North Colombo Teaching Hospital, Ragama. The academic staff of the department provides clinical services in the Obstetrics & Gynaecology wards of teaching hospital, Ragama in an honorary capacity. Furthermore the department conducts three antenatal clinics, three gynaecological clinics, one infertility clinic and a family planning clinic on a weekly basis. Nearly five thousand mothers will deliver their babies in the University Obstetrics ward every year. Over a thousand women receive surgical care from the university Gynaecology ward every year.

The department is involved in various academic researches with an internationally acclaimed reputation in Obstetric medicine, Gynaecological oncology, foetal medicine, urogynaecology and Subfertility. Postgraduate students are reading for research degrees attached to the department. The department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology has research collaborations with the WHO and many other local and international research agencies.

The department also provides opportunities for elective studies and many overseas students have carried out elective studies at the teaching hospital, Ragama.
