RESEARCH GROUP
HEMOGLOBINOPATHIES,
HEREDITARY RED CELL DISORDERS AND IRON METABOLISM

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

This group is carrying out clinical, epidemiological and translational research on haemoglobin disorders including β-thalassaemia, haemoglobin E β-thalassaemia, Sickle cell disease, α-thalassaemia, and hereditary red cell disorders like enzymopathies and membranopathies. The main emphasis is on the development of optimum tools for screening haemoglobin disorders in resource poor settings. With its close affiliation with the Paediatric, Adolescent and Adult Thalassaemia Units of the Colombo North Teaching Hospital, it has become a research hub for many international collaborators performing high-quality clinical and translational research on haemoglobinopathies.
