Screening for Thalassaemia among Medical Students
8th of May is the World Thalassaemia Day. This day is dedicated to celebrate the lives lost and the many battles won in the treatment and prevention of this neglected disease world-wide.
To commemorate world thalassaemia day the Steering Committee of the 30th Anniversary Celebrations of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya has organized a series of events which commenced on the 2nd of May with screening for thalassaemia among the 26th Batch of medical students.
This was conducted in the Faculty premises by the staff of the Adolescent and Adult thalassaemia Unit of the North Colombo (Teaching) Hospital under strict COVID 19 guidelines.
The “Ragama thalassaemia unit” the only specialised thalassaemia unit dedicated for the management of adult patients with thalassaemia in Sri Lanka is an excellent example for successful long-term collaboration of the Ministry of Health and the Higher Education authorities in Sri Lanka.
