UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

The English Intensive Course is one of the major conducts of the unit which aims at learner-centered language teaching. This 100 hours course is carried out both for the medical undergraduates and the undergraduates of Speech and Hearing Sciences before they embark on their academic courses in the main stream. The main objectives of the course are to equip students in terms of English to be able follow their degree programme offered in English medium while promoting their ability to communicate in English with peers and members of academic staff. Language skills: Writing, and Reading, Speaking, Listening are the prime components on which the students are assessed throughout and at the end of the course.

There are two major events which are conducted marking the end of the English Intensive Course. They are: The annual Speech Camp and the launch of “Bloom” Magazine.

In addition, two courses are offered for SHS undergraduates, in collaboration with the Department of English Language Teaching. During the first year, English for Speech Hearing Sciences course is conducted to improve their academic writing skills while developing the language skills they need to become successful Speech Language Therapists/ Audiologists in the future. Furthermore, during the final year the Research Skills course is offered in order to improve students’ academic writing skills which are needed for conducting their final year research.

Another component the English Language Unit conducts is the Student Selected Component” (SSC module) on “Literature and medicine”. This SSC module is conducted in order to expose them into humanities in medical education. When conducting this SSC module, motion pictures, memoirs and non-fictions are used in classrooms as tools of utilization to improve students’ humanity towards others.
