Effectiveness of improving Awareness on Dengue and solid waste management among selected target groups on preventing Dengue in high risk areas of district of Gampaha in Sri Lanka

Gampaha District is one of the most affected districts by Dengue menace, which has been susceptible in the past and has also recorded a high rate of infection and deaths. As the report implies, MOH areas such as Kelaniya, Gampaha, Ja-Ela, Mahara, Wattala, MC-Negambo, Ragama, Attanagalle in Gampaha District have been identified as high risk area of Dengue. Gampaha District has been ranked as the second most Dengue affected area, and it has the highest socio-economic status in the Western province. Therefore, there is a high possibility of spreading Dengue fever rapidly in the future, if control measures are not implemented properly.

Health education ensuring the ecology of vector, reasons for spreading and mechanisms of controllingis essential for the prevention and spreading of dengue. The key behaviors or activities that need to be addressed to prevent transmission, reduce severe disease and avoid fatalities can be imparted through the health education. Therefore health education on dengue and solid waste management is very important in this regard.

In this research project it is expected to conduct education and awareness programs on Dengue and solid waste management among selected target groups on preventing Dengue in high risk areas of district of Gampaha in Sri Lanka, having the objective of improving the awareness on "Spreading of Dengue disease and method of controlling" among selected target groups in selected MOH areas belonging to Gampaha district in order to reduce the risk at high risk areas through community participation.
