The Department of Forensic Medicine was accredited as a postgraduate training centre by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM) of the University of Colombo in 1996. At present, the Department undertakes training of postgraduate students for the PGIM's Diploma in Legal Medicine (DLM), and the MD in Forensic Medicine. Training for the DLM takes the form of an in-service clinical attachment of 2 years duration. Training for the MD includes a one year attachment in a university unit. These attachments include training in forensic pathology, clinical forensic medicine, scene visit investigations, report writing and giving expert evidence in a court of law under the direct supervision of their trainers. So far 13 Board Certified specialists in Forensic Medicine had their training at the Department. Another seven are in various stages of training.
The academics of the Department of Forensic Medicine have actively contributed to the development of the DLM and MD courses through their representation on the PGIM's Board of Study in Forensic Medicine over the years. They also participate in regular teaching sessions (lectures/ discussions) conducted by the PGIM for both DLM and MD trainees. Further, the staff organizes Centre based teaching activities mainly in the skill development areas on request by the PGIM.
Additionally, the Department is an approved training centre for the PGIM's Diploma in Family Medicine for a clinical attachment in Legal Medicine. It is also an approved training centre for forensic autopsies for the MD in Pathology.
