Annual Health Camp 2023 in Vakarai
In a significant effort to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals, experts, and the local community, the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Kelaniya organized the Annual Health Camp 2023 in Vakarai. This insightful initiative took place at Vakarai Maha Vidyalaya in the heart of the Batticaloa District, reaching out to nearly 600 students and 50 staff members in a predominantly Tamil area with a population of around 21,000, largely comprising impoverished fishermen and farmers.

The primary goals of the health camp were to raise awareness about prevalent health issues, educate participants on preventive measures and healthy lifestyle choices, encourage community engagement in addressing health challenges, and promote healthy habits and behaviors through interactive sessions.

The event, held on the 9th of July 2023, at Vakarai Maha Vidyalaya, aimed to engage residents of the local community, regardless of age or background. The organizing committee actively involved local representatives, conducted pre-event surveys to understand community health concerns, and collaborated with local schools, businesses, and organizations to encourage participation.

A budget of Rs. 250,000 was allocated for various aspects, including drugs, logistics, transport, food & beverages, and other expenses. The event was succeeded with active participation from healthcare professionals, volunteers, and local community representatives.

The health camp encompassed a comprehensive plan, including a clinic, exhibition, registration, BMI measurement, BP measurement, CBS screening, OPD, lab, therapy, speech and audiology units, and a pharmacy.

The impact of the health camp was substantial, with approximately 250 patients attending the medical clinic and 50 patients screened for speech and hearing problems. Chronic disease patients were referred to nearby hospitals for long-term care. Additionally, 200 spectacle frames and 160 stationary packs were donated to school children, further emphasizing the camp's commitment to community welfare.

The success of the Annual Health Camp 2023 in Vakarai would not have been possible without the support of medical students, the Department of Disability Studies at the University of Kelaniya, the Sri Lanka Army, Vakarai Maha Vidyalaya, and other dedicated participants.

This initiative not only addressed immediate health concerns within the community but also fostered team building and collaboration among various stakeholders. The Annual Health Camp in Vakarai exemplified the positive impact that community engagement, education, and healthcare initiatives can have on the well-being of individuals and communities at large. It serves as a testament to the power of collective efforts in promoting holistic health and fostering a sense of unity within diverse communities.
