Dengue Awareness Workshop for the Dengue surveillance Team of the Faculty
Green Practices Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and Department of Parasitology conducted a workshop for the elected non-academic staff members of the Faculty of Medicine on Dengue, vector breeding habitats and identification of vectors on 26th July 2017 from 10. 00 am to 12.00 noon at the Faculty Board Room and the Laboratory of the Department of Parasitology. Dr. Nayana Gunathilaka, Senior Lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya Co-ordinated this event. The key note address was delivered by Dr. Nayana Gunathilaka and a Lecture on Dengue situation, identification of vectors and breeding habitats. Ms. Lakmini Radika, Senior Environmental Officer, Central Environmental Authority (CEA) delivered a Lecture of Solid Waste Management and 3 R concept. Ms. Tharanga Jayasinghe, Assistant Registrar of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya facilitated the event. Mr. Hemantha Sudusinghe and Mr. Waruna Nilaweera of the Department of Parasitology assisted the laboratory session on vector identification.
In the workshop surveillance teams were formed to monitor the dengue vector breeding habitats in the faculty premises. The faculty premises was divided into 4 areas and a team of 7 members was allocated for monitoring activities. Each team is assigned to conduct surveys in the first and the third Monday of every month and report surveillance results. Immediate follow up actions will be taken to eliminate potential and positive breeding sites for disease vectors. All members actively participated in the workshop and extended their willingness to continue the surveillance and monitoring program.
