"Malaria Heroes" – Contribution to Malaria elimination in South East Asia countries
Prof. Rajitha Wickremasinghe has been involved in the malaria elimination and prevention of re-introduction programme in Sri Lanka from 2009 onwards. He developed the National Strategic Plan for malaria elimination and prevention of re-introduction in Sri Lanka and was a member of the Technical Support Group that assisted the Anti-Malaria Campaign in Sri Lanka.
His services have been obtained for malaria control and elimination in other countries in the region. He has been involved in evaluating the malaria control programme and developing the national strategic plan for malaria control in Timor Leste since 2009. His services were also obtained to report on the epidemiology of malaria in Myanmar and to develop the national strategic plan for malaria elimination. He was part of the team that developed the strategic plan for malaria elimination in the WHO South East Asia Region 2016-2030. He also developed the Surveillance, Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for the countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-region.
Currently, Prof. Wickremasinghe is contracted by the Asian Development Bank as an International Malaria Expert to develop guidelines for malaria elimination in Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
