Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya Launches Two Mobile Apps for Cancer Care.

 Bcancer          stoma care

The Department of Surgery officially launched two mobile apps for “Breast Cancer Care” and “Stoma Care” on 7th of October 2017 at the College of Surgeons Auditorium, Colombo. This was a collaborative project between the Department of Surgery, University of Kelaniya, Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) and Mobitel Lanka PLC. “Breast Cancer Care” is the first comprehensive app developed worldwide for breast cancer patient management and “Stoma Care” is the first app developed for stoma care in the South East Asian region.

These apps would increase the connectivity and communication between patients (breast cancer patients and stoma patients), breast/stoma care nurses and surgeons. Thus, these cancer patients will be provided a personalised surgical care to uplift their quality of life. Also, information about breast cancer and rectal cancer is available in all three languages for the convenience of patients and general public.

The Department of Surgery provided the medical content and design of the apps and ACCIMT did the software development. Mobitel Lanka PLC provided the backend support and hosting of these apps as the national telecommunication provider. The occasion was graced and addressed by Prof. Nilanthi De Silva (Dean, Faculty of Medicine), Prof. Ranil Fernando (Head, Department of Surgery), Dr. Nalinda Munasinghe (Lecturer, Department of Surgery), Prof. Kemal Deen (Chairman, ACCIMT), Mr. Sanath Panawenna (Director General, ACCIMT), Mr. Kumarasinghe Sirisena (Chairman, Mobitel Lanka PLC) and Ms. Jean Fernandez (Senior Manager, Customer Care, Mobitel Lanka PLC). Surgeons, surgical trainees, stoma care nurses, breast care nurses and patients attended the ceremony.

These two apps can be downloaded via the Google Play store, free of charge, to be used in Android smart phones.
